At the age of 16, Dr. Phan was confronted with an unexpected medical situation with her mother which quickly immersed her into the medical field. She was impressed by her mother’s primary care physician who answered all of her family’s questions, eased their fears, and helped them to cope with the difficult situation. She also realized the importance of preventive medicine to maintain good health. This pivotal moment helped Dr. Phan realize that she wanted to pursue a career as a primary care physician.
Dr. Phan chose to focus on family medicine due to the variety of patients and medical conditions encountered. She enjoys meeting and treating patients of all age groups and walks of life. Family medicine also allows her to provide continuity of care in an outpatient setting, where she is able to develop long-term relationships, get to know her patients, and provide the individualized care each person deserves.
She views her role as both a physician and an educator and aims to understand, research and synthesize the information to help her patients make informed decisions. Her goal is to empower her patients to take control of their lives. According to Dr. Phan, “I want to offer my patients a care plan unique to their situation. My ultimate goal is the improved health of my patients and community. I am able to achieve this by leveraging my knowledge and utilizing the resources available to me at Hoag.”
Fluent in Spanish and Vietnamese, Dr. Phan attended medical school at University of California, San Diego and completed her residency at Long Beach Memorial.
